Something new to talk about.

It has been too long since my last entry. Since I have no further comments concerning local restaurants I believe it is time to end that subject. I will give someone else the chance to write about Columbia's restaurants while I try something different. I have been thinking about my next subject and what items that could draw attention to this blog. I thought politics but that alienates too many people (thanks Jeff). I love to talk about economics but most people run from that subject. So I have picked my number one interest, movies, because almost everyone watches them and always seems to have opinions. I will write about films I have seen and put them in different categories. These categories will be updated as I watch additional movies for my list. Now I want to thank my friends Ted, Randy and Brad who first got me started on movie lists way back in 1980. All of us would sit around the table at the Cork and Dart Pub writing lists of movies on napkins while drinking until the place closed. We had lists on individual stars, movies that actors vomited (?) and movies we would love to see made among other subjects. This was before all of us had VCRs so we had to use our memories from television or theatre showings. So you movie lovers, I hope you enjoy or at least read the entries. Be sure to leave a comment as it helps the entertainment value.

Hi,

I stumbled on this while looking around for the name of Bobby Buford's. Fun blog!

I enjoyed your posts, especially about Buford's, Taco Tico, and North Village Sub Shop.

I've looked for Taco Ticos ever since that era. When I used to drive from KC to Santa Fe, I often went via Wichita because there was one along that route. I got the tostadas, though.

Sub Shop, always half veggie on whole wheat.

Thanks for a fun blog. I've forwarded it to my brothers who shared that Columbia experience.

Absolutely fascinating blog and well written too. It nicely captures some of the culinary oddities on Columbia Missouri.

For me, the Sub Shop remains the iconic restuarant that best represents Columbia in terms of food. Still some of the best subs in the country and they haven't changed that much over the years. I don't get back to Columbia often, but when I do, it's one of my first stops.

Does anybody remember the location of the first Sub Shop? It was called Yellow Submarine and was located near the southeast corner of Ripley and Windsor streets in a small building that was once Frank's Market. In the mid-70s the house next door caught fire and burned down, taking Yellow Sub with it. They reopened later downtown as the Sub Shop. If you go to the Worley Street location you will see on the wall a huge, hand-painted, wooden replica of the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. This was the sign at the original location, which was salvaged from the fire.

I think back fondly at some of the old fun places to go eat. When I was a kid I used to go to showbiz Pizza. That was always fun. I remember going to the Hayden house a few times but I was a little too young to remember. The original pasta factory downtown was excellent. I always got the toasted ravioli. My sister worked at rax restaurant and my other one worked at furrs' cafeteria. I really miss Alexander's steakhouse. That was a fun place with an incredible atmosphere.
